What is a mail server?
A mail server is a program that sends messages from one server to another. Everyone who has an email account uses mail servers like Google, or other services. However, if we talk about the work of a business project, then free services may not be suitable for some purposes.Having your own mail server will bring you more advantages than disadvantages. How to create a mail server on your computer or a separate server? This process can have several methods – we have described the simplest of them.
Advantages of having own mail server
Safety. Your own server is your responsibility for security. Working on a shared server, you never know which security policies might be violated. Reliability. You don’t have to worry that other users may send spam on this server, thus undermining your work. Full control. Your server, your rules. On your mail server, you can set up a spam filter, attachment restrictions, install special software, and so on.
Easy ways to configure your own mail server
If you are not an expert, then it’s better to use ready-made solutions.
Use the simple script to setup mail server based on Postfix, follow instruction and install all the necessary modules automatically. In 10 minutes you will already have a configured mail server. After installation you will be able to use Roundcube webmail.
Or you can download and install mailcow first, then configure mail server via this software. The installation method is a bit more complicated than the previous one.
Requirements
To use those scripts and configure your own smtp server you will need:
Server
- CentOS 7 OS
- 1GHz processor
- 1GB+ RAM
- 5GB+ disk space
Domain Name
If you don’t have it yet, get it. Your email address depends on it (domain – ishosting.com, mail – mail@ishosting.com).
Server (or a separate computer). It can be either a VPS or a dedicated server. All your letters will be stored on it and you should choose a suitable configuration for this in advance. If you are planning a large flow of correspondence, choose a server with sufficient disk space.
